COX COMMUNICATIONS TO PROVIDE CHALLENGER LEARNING
CENTER OF
ARIZONA WITH ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
Cox Partnership Valued at $336,000 in Cash and
In-Kind Contributions
Cox Communications Phoenix is partnering with the Challenger
Learning Center of Arizona to become the exclusive tull-service provider of communications
services and technology. Under the partnership, Cox will donate $336,000 in cash and
in-kind contributions to the new learning center. "This generous donation on behalf
of Cox Communications supports the technology-based space science educational
opportunities students throughout Arizona will experience for many generations to
come," said Paul Koehler, president of The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona’s
Board of Directors. The official groundbreaking of the new Challenger Learning Center of
Arizona is scheduled for October29, 1998.
Under the partnership, Cox will connect the Learning Center to its
valley-wide hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network. This new advanced infrastructure will make
it possible for Cox to provide the Learning Center with high-speed Internet access,
digital telephone and cable television. Cox will also donate other communications
equipment including a satellite dish, which will allow the Learning Center to receive
video satellite signal uplinks and downlinks. Cox’s in-kind contribution of communications
equipment to the Learning Center is valued at approximately $286,000.
In addition to its in-kind contributions, Cox will
make a cash donation of $50,000 to the Learning Center between 1998 and 2001. Gregg
Holmes, vice president and general manager of Cox Communications Phoenix remarked,
"Cox’s proven technology will greatly enhance The Challenger Learning Center’s
unique, educational environment. It will provide educators and students a world of
information at their fingertips. Our commitment to education through the use of technology
continues to strengthen the minds of children and prepare them for the next century.
The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona is a unique education
and community development effort that will establish a space flight simulator in Peoria,
Arizona. The primary purpose of this facility is to motivate and better educate young
people in science, technology and mathematics by offering them a series of on-site
"missions" involving simulated space flight crews, mission controllers and
scientists. These programs teach children valuable problem solving, critical thinking and
communication skills necessary for today’s business world.
Eventually, the complex will incorporate the McCall Museum of
Space and Art, a planetarium, and a unique corporate and civic meeting and training
facility. With 30 Challenger Learning Centers across the United States and Canada, more
than 300,000 students and teachers take part in "missions" annually. The
Challenger Learning Center of Arizona will be co-located with Sunrise Mountain High School
in the Peoria Unified School District, 21200 N. 83~ Avenue in Phoenix.
