THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS!
IN PREPARATION FOR GROUNDBREAKING,
THE CHALLENGER LEARNING CENTER OF ARIZONA
ANNOUNCES THE SELECTION OF A GENERAL CONTRACTOR
The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona is extremely
pleased to announce that one of Arizona’s premier contractors, TGI/Target General,
Inc., has been selected as the General Contractor for this historic construction project.
Groundbreaking for this world-class space science education facility will take place in
October of this year, with the Center scheduled to open in 1999. The Center will be
located on land adjacent to Sunrise Mountain High School in the Peoria Unified School
District, at 21200 N. 83rd Avenue (north of Union Hills.)
When asked why he got involved with the Challenger Center, Howard
Maurer, President of Target General said, "When I saw the video of the Challenger
Shuttle exploding in mid-air, I just got tears in my eyes, and I knew this was something I
really wanted to do. I’ve built a lot of schools, and I feel this is my time to give
something back to the children of Arizona. It’s a very exciting project to be
involved in, and the community will soon find out just how lucky they are to have the
Challenger Center right here in our very own city."
TGI/Target General, Inc. is a 16-year-old, family-owned
construction company, and is Arizona’s seventh largest contractor. The company has
generously agreed to forego all their profit on the Challenger Center as a gesture of
goodwill towards the community, and especially towards the schoolchildren of Arizona.
According to Dr. Paul H. Koehler, President of the Board of Directors of the Challenger
Learning Center of Arizona, "We’re very grateful that Target General is
partnering with us on a project that will have far reaching effects on student learning,
career exploration, and teacher training. Parents, community members, and especially, the
children of Arizona, will all benefit for many years to come from Howard Maurer’s
extraordinary generosity."
Target General was also the general contractor for the Bank One
Ballpark, the recently completed Frontier Elementary School in the Peoria School District,
the ASU Residence Life Expansion housing facility, and Desert Vista High School, among
many other projects. The company is part of the Combined Construction Companies with
locations all across the United States, and averages a project volume of $145 million per
year.
Although its primary focus is education, the awe-inspiring
experience of a Challenger Learning Center mission will extend beyond the school day and
will not be limited to just students. The Center will be open seven days a week, 12 months
a year, for use by community organizations, youth groups, and for activities such as
corporate team-building exercises. Any questions regarding the Challenger Learning Center
of Arizona should be directed to Ms. Sandi Hicks, Director of Community Relations for the
Center, at (623) 486-6040.
