Summer Space Science Tuition Rebate Opportunity
The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona will conduct a drawing
to determine winners for tuition rebate opportunities. One, $100 tuition rebate will be
awarded to a participant enrolled in either session of the Challenger Ambassador Academy
(501 & 601). $50 tuition rebates will be awarded to two participants enrolled in the
remaining academy class offerings. Each rebate opportunity is contingent upon minimum
class sizes being met. Rebate recipients will be notified on Friday, May 28th.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to Mars? Mars City Alpha is an exciting
classroom simulation that will transform students into scientists and engineers launching
an international effort to design a settlement on Mars. Students will learn how Mars is
currently being explored through a visit to Arizona State University with Sheri KIug, Mars
Education K-12 Program Director. While at ASU, students will learn first-hand how Mars
information is gathered and interpreted. If you are ready for an out-of-this-worid

Interested in becoming a tour guide for our Solar System? Cosmic EdVentures can make it
happen. Participants will train to become Planetary Excursion Planners (PEPers). During
the week, students will explore all of the members of our Solar System, scale of the
planets, phases of the Moon, the Sun, and many more fascinating features in the Solar
System. Discover why exploration is the essence of learning. |

Welcome to the world of Robotix! Experience a mission similar to the one NASA’s
robots will take as they search for potential life on Mars Participants in this exciting
class will have the opportunity to let their imaginations soar. Learn about the basic
science behind the design and operation of robots.With Robotix, students will learn the
basics in building and programming robots for simple and complex tasks.Rocketry 302 & 402

Rocketry 302 (June 14 – June 18)
Rocketry 402 (June 21 – June 25)
Times: 8 am – 1 pm; Monday – Thursday

Grades: Entering grades 5-8 in Fall 1999
3…2…1 …Blast off! Model rocketry is a great way to learn about rockets and space
exploration. Participants in this class will learn how a rocket is constructed, how the
parts of a rocket function, how a rocket works, how altitude and speed are determined, and
how science and rockets are connected using Newton’s three Laws of Motion. Students
will construct and launch rockets. This class will be able to accommodate a wide variety
of rocketry experience levels. |

Ambassador Academy
Dates:
Challenger Ambassador Camp 501 (July 5 – 9)
Challenger Ambassador Camp 601 (July 12 – 16)
Time: 8 am – 12 noon; Monday -Thursday 8am-6pm; Friday
Cost: $250 per student includes class matenals, mid-morning snack, Tucson transportation,
Comet mission, Tucson lunch, Morphus Experience, Pima Air & Space Museum admission,
challenger T-shirt, and other surprises.
Limit: 28 students.
Grades: Completed grades 5 – 7 during academic year 1998-1999The Challenger Learning Center of Arizona will open during 1999-2000. In
preparation for this, the center is offering a first-time Challenger Ambassador Academy.
The Challenger Ambassador Academy will provide selected students with the training
required to undertake the exciting simulated space scenario "Rendezvous with a
Comet." Appointed Ambassadors will promote the Challenger Learning Center of Arizona
by sharing their experiences with individuals, schools, organizations, and businesses.
They will participate in Challenger Learning Center special events and represent the
Challenger Learning Center of Arizona.
This class requires teacher recommendation and parental
permission.
Interested students must submit an application form indicating
their interest in becoming a Challenger Ambassador. Completed application must contain a
teacher recommendation and parental permission. The week-long camp will include
station-specific and whole group activities needed to successfully complete their mission.
Days IA will involve all prereq- -uisite training essential for the mission. Day 5 will
end with a trip to the Challenger Learning Center of the Southwest in Tucson at the Pima
Air & Space Museum to compete their mission. This is an unique opportunity for
students to learn first-hand the excitement involved with a Challenger Learning Center
experience.
