U.S. Astronaut Joseph Acaba
Makes Challenger Space Center Appearance
December 28, 2-4 p.m.
Children participating in the Cosmic Kids Holiday Camp at Challenger Space Center are in for a real treat – a visit by a U.S. astronaut! In addition, kids will meet Smokey The Bear because Mr. Acaba is visiting Arizona with the U.S. Forest Service and Challenger’s own mascot, Cosmo, will also be on hand for photos.
U.S. Astronaut Joseph Acaba
Joseph Michael “Joe” Acaba is an educator, hydro geologist, and NASA astronaut. In May 2004 he became the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to be named as a NASA astronaut candidate, when he was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Training Group 19.
He completed his training on February 10, 2006 and was assigned to STS-119, which flew from March 15 to March 28, 2009 to deliver the final set of solar arrays to the International Space Station. Acaba then served as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station, having launched on May 15, 2012, aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-04M .He arrived at the space station on May 17 and returned to Earth on September 17, 2012, after spending four months in space. Acaba is visiting Arizona as a guest of the U.S. Forest Service, so kids will enjoy a visit from Smokey the Bear, too!
