Elementary and middle school children whose parents work at General Dynamics Decision Systems are learning how astronauts live and work in space, launching rockets, building robots, and exploring adventures related to the history of flight at a series of week-long summer camps put on by the Challenger Space Center, and paid for by General Dynamics.
Three special sessions of the camp are being held on General Dynamics’ Scottsdale campus, located a 8201 East McDowell Road. The first two sessions, held the weeks of
June 16-20 and June 23-27, are for 4th through 6th graders. The final session, which will be held the week of July 14-18, is for 7th through 9th graders. Each camp runs from 8 a.m.
to 2 p.m. and includes 25 young space adventurers. General Dynamics is paying the $200 per camper fee, as well as providing lunch and goodies for the children.
“General Dynamics is to be commended for providing this unique opportunity to their employees’ children,” said Sandi Hicks, Executive Director of the Challenger Space Center. “We look forward to working with them, and being the catalyst that will inspire these young people to learn more about math, science, and technology.”
“The Challenger Space Center is one of the most unique and educational science centers in the world and we knew we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to provide this camp experience for our employees’ children,” said Ron Taylor, a senior vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Decision Systems. “It’s even more significant for General Dynamics because we are involved in the space industry and this opportunity enables us to foster the sciences by letting our employees’ kids see some of what their parents do for a living.”
