CHALLENGER SPACE CENTER TO HOST MEMORIAL PROGRAM HONORING COLUMBIA ASTRONAUTS
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 4, the Challenger Space Center is planning several memorial activities in response to the Columbia tragedy
February 4th, 2003

On Tuesday, February 4, the Challenger Space Center is extending our hours until 8:00 p.m. to allow the public the opportunity to pay their respects at the Columbia memorial at the Center. At 7:15 p.m., Gov. Janet Napolitano will make brief remarks, followed by Brig Gen (Sel) Philip M. Breedlove, Commander, 56th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base, and Sandi Hicks, Executive Director of the Challenger Space Center. This short program is intended to help provide closure during this time of national mourning. The public is invited to bring candles, flowers, and other tributes.

CHALLENGER SPACE CENTER THEATER OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TO VIEW NASA MEMORIAL SERVICE

On Tuesday, February 4, the President and Mrs. George W. Bush will join NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe in paying tribute to the brave heroes of the Space Shuttle Columbia during a special memorial service at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. The ceremony to honor NASA astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark,and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. Phoenix time. This private ceremony for family members, friends, and invited guests will be shown live in the Challenger Space Center’s theater. Attendees should please plan to arrive by 10:30 so that the theatre will be quiet when the ceremony begins. There is no charge for admission.

REGULARLY SCHEDULED SCHOOL ACTIVITIES WILL CONTINUE AS PLANNED

Several schools have simulated space missions and other space-related activities planned for the day; these will continue as planned. As students arrive, they will be allowed to view the Columbia memorial, and will be briefed on the Columbia astronauts in an age-appropriate manner. If they so choose, they will then be offered the opportunity to either select a flower, or write or draw a card that they can then place at the memorial.

The following groups are scheduled to participate in missions and activities throughout the day:

9:30 a.m. Canyon Breeze School, Pendergast School District, Mars Mission
9:30 a.m. Desert Valley Elementary, Peoria Unified School District, Space Place II Program
10:30 a.m. Copper Rim Elementary, Globe School District, To Be An Astronaut Program
12:30 p.m. Cocopah School, Scottsdale School District, Mars Mission
3:00 p.m. Brownie Troop 1167, Glendale/Peoria, To Be An Astronaut Program
