| MEET ASTRONAUTS AND WIN TRIP TO WATCH SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH! |
| DECEMBER 30, 2002 |

| In front of the astronaut crew of NASA’s STS 110 Space Shuttle, a team of four students from Maricopa Unified School District won the trip of a lifetime when they were declared the First Place winners in the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Challenge held at the Challenger Space Center in Peoria this morning. The team, including their teacher, will fly to Florida to watch a launch of the space shuttle next spring.
“We were truly speechless when it was announced we won!” said teacher Nancy Rollins. “The kids worked incredibly hard on this project; in fact, three of them were on the team last year as well, so this has been a two-year project for most of them. They have been eating and sleeping ‘space’ for months – and now they’ve won a much-deserved and phenomenal reward.”
Taught by Nancy Rollins, the team members, including their grades and job assignments, are as follows from left to right in the picture: - Mario Bandin: 5th grade. Assignment: Researcher
- Johnnie Rae Cyr, 8th grade. Assignment: Scientist
- Nancy Rollins. Assignment: Team Coach
- Kelsey Early, 8th grade. Assignment: Principal Investigator
- Ronnie Lyn Cyr: 6th grade. Assignment: Artist
The team, along with Mrs. Rollins, all received tickets to the Fiesta Bowl where they will be recognized during half-time. In the spring, they will all be flown to Florida, where they will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kennedy Space Center, and will watch a launch of the space shuttle.
“We commend Honeywell and the Fiesta Bowl for their courage in organizing an academic event among so many athletic competitions and special events throughout the Valley,” said Sandi Hicks, Executive Director of the Challenger Space Center. “The very special events of today, being able to listen to real American heroes and explorers of new frontiers, will remain with these students, teachers, and parents for many years to come.”
The other finalist teams were: - Ira Murphy Elementary, Peoria. Teacher: Mark Wingert.
- St. Simon and Jude Elementary (two teams), Phoenix. Teacher: Maureen Hill.
- Central Phoenix Home Educators, Phoenix. Teacher: Valarie Spink.
