Education School Field Trips

Looking for a fun and educational school field trip? We’ve got the answers for pre-k and beyond!

The Challenger Space Center delivers space-themed, age-appropriate activities, designed to teach kids about Space Science while having fun at the same time!

Field Trips and Workshops available for grades:
Pre K – Kindergarten, Space Place
1st – 2nd Grade, Destination Space Station
3rd – 5th Grade, NEO Landing
  6th – 8th Grade, Spaced Out

Please note: all Education Programs are facilitated by Challenger Space Center Flight Directors.

All Field Trips and Workshops are suitable for one class at a time, but multiple classes can run simultaneously in different classrooms.

 

Space Place
Ages Pre K and Kindergarten

Take a trip to space in the Earth Space Transit Module. This two-hour classroom field trip is facilitated by a Flight Director. It explores our planet and the solar system in a way that is both fun and educational for students. Through carefully selected books, video and hands on creative activities, students will be captivated by the mysteries and wonders of space exploration by our astronauts and learn what it takes to be an astronaut.

Cost
$370.00 per session (one classroom). Each session is designed for a classroom with a maximum of 30 students. Two Chaperones per classroom plus the Educator bringing his/her class is included in the price of the program. Destination: Space Station
1st and 2nd Grade 

This two-hour classroom field trip facilitated by a Flight Director focuses on the nine planets in our solar system. With the use of team-work, students build an international space station, take a trip to space in the Earth Space Transit Module and through the use of books, video and hands on creative activities learn what it takes to be an astronaut.

NEO Landing
3rd through 5th Grade

  NASA is entering a new era of human space exploration.  By 2025, NASA scientists plan to send an astronaut to a Near-Earth Object (NEO) as a springboard to future Mars missions. A voyage to a NEO could take three to six months and cover five million miles. Today’s students who learn how to live and work on these extended NEO journeys are the space travelers of tomorrow. Excite your students about the possibilities of space exploration with this program designed in accordance with Arizona’s 3rd – 5th grade standards. A Challenger Center Flight Director will lead your students through a two-hour workshop featuring hands-on activity stations and an interactive demonstration which explores the properties of light which inform us about of the universe. This workshop was formerly known as Moonbase 2020 and has been tailored to match NASA’s new initiative.

Spaced Out
6th through 8th Grade

Today’s students, tomorrow’s space colonists. The path will not be easy but with this early start and proper training, these future astronauts will be ready for the mental and physiological challenges ahead. With the guidance of a Flight Director your class will explore how astronauts are trained and experience first hand the stress of an emergency situation by reenacting the near disaster aboard Apollo 13. Teams of students must design and build a working air filter using only the equipment available to the Apollo crew. In addition, a series of interactive demonstrations will allow the students to investigate the effects of microgravity on the human body.

Reservation and Payment Policy for ALL School & Pre-formed Youth Groups
  • Due to limited space, program demands including staffing, and the time involved in securing a purchase order from a school or school district, school group reservations should be made a minimum of 30-days in advance.
  • A purchase order (PO) or prepayment is required to guarantee the date of your Mission, Field Trip, or Summer Tour. The PO should be for the total cost of your program and must include the date of your visit. Fax PO to ACCOUNTING DEPT. at 623-322-3716 or mail to Challenger Space Center, Attn: Accounting Dept., 21170 N. 83rd Avenue, Peoria AZ 85382.
  • Until a PO or prepayment is provided, Challenger Space Center may place your group’s request on “tentative hold” and is in no way a guarantee of programs or space and Challenger reserves the right to book another group offering full payment during your group’s tentative hold. Cancellation policies and program minimums/maximums apply. (see below)
  • Upon receipt of a PO, Challenger will issue an invoice (with reference to your PO#) to your school or district office.
  • If unable to issue a PO, contact Challenger Space Center Accounting Department at 623-322-2013 for pre-payment by credit card or other method.
  • Without a PO, full payment must be made two weeks before your visit to ensure the group rate and space availability. If full payment is not received, your group will be removed from the schedule and the trip must be rescheduled.

Cancellation Policy for ALL School & Pre-formed Youth Groups

  • You must notify us 14 days before your scheduled visit to receive a refund or credit towards another date.
  • Payment in full is expected for the number reserved, even if the individuals do not attend.
  • No-shows and cancellations within 14 days are subject to full payment and your PO will be invoiced accordingly.


Minimums and Maximums – School & Pre-formed Youth Groups

In order to insure that each member of your school group has a quality experience, Challenger Space Center has program minimums and maximums which must be adhered to for quality control. Field trips/workshops can be run simultaneously. Examples:

  • The maximum number of youth for a Field trip/workshop is 30.
  • Field trip/workshop groups exceeding maximums will be assessed an additional fee per student and per adult.
  • Due to the nature of the program, the absolute maximum number to board each simulated space mission is 32.
Chaperones: 1 teacher plus 2 chaperones are included in the price of the program. General admission of $8 will be charged for each additional chaperone.
