Part-Time Flight Director/ Program Instructor

The Part-Time Flight Directors and Program Instructors are responsible for delivering, maintaining and, if necessary, improving the quality educational programs delivered by the Challenger Center. These programs include our on-site missions, E-missions, field trip programs, summer and holiday camps, and public tours. Other responsibilities include being a liaison between the Challenger Space Center of Arizona and the large variety of visitors and guests who will visit here in the capacity of teacher workshops, community missions, corporate missions, student workshops, public programs, special events, and tours. This position offers flexibility in scheduling and could be a great job for teachers, college students, retired aerospace professionals, stay-at-home moms, or anyone else interested in teaching and inspiring children.

The Flight Directors and Program Instructors will report to the Lead Education Flight Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Conducts missions, programs, classes, workshops, and other educational activities related to the Challenger Space Center with the direct input of the Lead Flight Director, and the Directors of Education and Corporate and Public Programs.

a. Flies missions with students and adults with responsibility for the educational impact of the simulation.

b. Plans and conducts mission-related teacher education workshops, student workshops, community workshops, corporate missions, special events, and tours.

c. Assists with the development of mission-related written materials, AV materials, and other educational resources for schools, public, staff, volunteers, and other guests of the Challenger Learning Center of Arizona.

d. Helps coordinate and perform outreach activities, field trip programs, summer camps, public tours and all other educational activities.

2. Performs record management, goal management, and team support duties.

a. Sets area and individual goals and objectives to be accomplished that have been identified by the Education Director and/or the Lead Education Flight Director.

b. Represents the Challenger Learning Center of Arizona at meetings and gatherings
when appropriate.

c. Assists in departmental planning and problem solving.

d. Supports other staff members in reaching their goals and objectives so the Challenger Space Center of Arizona may reach its full potential.

3. Performs necessary facility operations

a. Assists in coordinating facility volunteer program.

b. Assists in the preparation of facility manuals.

c. Assists in center marketing development and distribution.

4. Maintains a high level of professionalism in carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities.

a. Establishes and adjusts daily work to maintain efficient work flow.

b. Accepts directives with enthusiasm and commitment.

c. Supports the Challenger Space Center philosophy and adheres to all work rules, policies, and procedures.

d. Exhibits willingness to perform whatever duties are necessary in the development and maintenance of the Challenger Space Center of Arizona.

e. Seeks and participates in appropriate training activities that improve effectiveness, knowledge, and skills related to the job role, including aerospace education.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree (preferably in education, science or another space-related field).

2. One year teaching experience or equivalent; relevant work experience considered.

3. Teaching experience desired. (Our programs range from pre-K to adult).

4. Experience in technology and computer assisted instruction desired.

5. Willingness to travel.

6. Good communication, leadership, organizational, and management skills.

7. Experience in multicultural settings.

8. Physical effort and dexterity: Ability to manipulate props and technical equipment, including some lifting and moving of show materials.

9. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults, accept directives with enthusiasm and commitment, support the Center’s philosophy and exhibit a willingness to perform whatever duties are necessary in the development of the Center.

Marketing/Public
Relations Internship

The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Marketing and the Media Relations Liaison with administrative duties associated with Center’s marketing, community relations, media relations and advertising programs. Intern will report to the Director of Marketing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Participate in weekly staff meetings of the Marketing Department
Coordinate advertising schedule – budget, media buys, design, print and banners
Coordinate the media database and conduct media follow-up calls
Draft press releases and feature articles for the quarterly newsletter
Assist in maintaining and updating the Center’s website
Assist in the production and promotion of annual events
Administer visitor and member profile (research)
Assist in the development and monitoring of the Challenger Space Center Membership program
Process marketing department invoices. Review invoices for accuracy and use database program to track expenses and budget status
File correspondence, invoices, publications and other written materials
Assist in preparing quarterly report for the Marketing team
Collect and prepare meeting and presentation materials for the Director
Assist Director with all correspondence, mailings, spreadsheets, and additional administrative duties
Respond to requests for materials and information

Qualifications

A minimum of 30 college credit hours or equivalent work experience in communications/marketing
Candidate must possess excellent writing, speaking and communication skills
Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
Ability to function in a fast-paced environment
Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults, accept directives with enthusiasm and commitment, support the Center’s philosophy and exhibit a willingness to perform whatever duties are necessary in the development of the Center
