Part-Time Flight Director

The Part-Time Flight Directors and Program Instructors are responsible for delivering, maintaining and, if necessary, improving the quality educational programs delivered by the Challenger Space Center. These programs include our on-site missions, E-missions, field trip programs, summer and holiday camps, and public tours. Other responsibilities include being a liaison between the Challenger Space Center of Arizona and the large variety of visitors and guests who will visit here in the capacity of teacher workshops, community missions, corporate missions, student workshops, public programs, special events, and tours. This contract position offers flexibility in scheduling and could be a great job for teachers, college students, retired aerospace professionals, stay-at-home moms, or anyone else interested in teaching and inspiring children.

The Flight Directors and Program Instructors will report to the Lead Education Flight Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Conducts missions, programs, classes, workshops, and other educational activities related to the Challenger Space Center with the direct input of the Lead Flight Director.

a. Flies missions with students and adults with responsibility for the educational impact of the simulation.

b. Plans and conducts mission-related teacher education workshops, student workshops, community workshops, corporate missions and special events.

c. Helps coordinate and perform outreach activities, field trip programs, summer camps, public tours and all other educational activities.

2. Performs record management, goal management, and team support duties.

a. Sets area and individual goals and objectives to be accomplished that have been identified by the Education Director and/or the Lead Education Flight Director.

b. Represents the Challenger Space Center of Arizona at meetings and gatherings when appropriate.

c. Assists in departmental planning and problem solving.

d. Supports other staff members in reaching their goals and objectives so the Challenger Space Center of Arizona may reach its full potential.

3. Maintains a high level of professionalism in carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities.

a. Establishes and adjusts daily work to maintain efficient work flow.

b. Accepts directives with enthusiasm and commitment.

c. Supports the Challenger Space Center philosophy and adheres to all work rules, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in education or science, or current college student.

2. Current teaching certificate or equivalent desired but not required.

3. One year teaching experience or equivalent, relevant work experience considered.

4. Teaching experience with kindergarten through eighth grade students desired.

5. Experience in technology and computer assisted instruction desired.

6. Good communication, leadership, organizational, and management skills.

7. Experience in multicultural settings.

8. Physical effort and dexterity: Ability to manipulate props and technical equipment, including some lifting and moving of show materials.

9. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
